Cocktail Mixers

With mixology and craft cocktail trends on the rise, consumer interest in cocktail mixers has gained momentum. Mixers are the non-alcoholic ingredients added to alcohol to create a cocktail. Cocktail recipes vary widely, and can range from a simple list of ingredients to an exotic menu with intricate preparation instructions. As the cocktail culture continues to grow, new flavor profiles and product innovations continue to drive the cocktail mixer category.

History

Cocktail Mixers

The origins of the word "cocktail" has been disputed through etymology and farmers. The first recorded use of the word, when not referring to a horse, was found in The Morning Post and Gazetteer in London, England, March 20, 1798.

Traditionally cocktail ingredients included sugar, water, bitters, and of course... spirits. Later, this particular recipe evolved to include the addition of a liqueur. With wine and beer being less available during the Prohibition era in the U.S.A., liquor-based cocktails became more popular due to accessibility.

Key Considerations

  1. Typically, cocktail mixers have a shelf life of 3 years and can be stored at room temperature if they have not been opened. For cream-based or real fruit-based mixers, this will vary.
  2. If your cocktail mixer has any bitters or liqueurs included in its ingredients list, it will undergo a different set of regulatory procedure, versus a completely non-alcoholic cocktail mixer.
